Analysis of Settlement of Solids and Foundations

(a) With help of stress- strain diagram, distinguish between following for soils.
(i) Peak and Residual strength.
(ii) Initial tangent modulus and secant modulus. 23O
(b) Define stress path. Draw the stress path for stress changes in tn-axial tests and the corresponding field applications.
(a) Derive a relation between principal stresses at the failure during tn-axial test.
(b) A specimen of clean, dry, cohesionless sand is tested in a shear box and
soil failed at a shear stress of 40 kN/m2 when the normal load was
50 kN/m2.
Determine:
(I) Angle of shearing resistance. MY 2001
(ii) Principal stresses at the failure.
(iii) Direction of principal planes.
(a) Explain the salient points in the strength behaviour of saturated cohesive soils under undrained test conditions.
(b) A soil specimen having C =86 kN/m2 and = 300 is tested in a tn-axial appratus. Estimate.
(i) The deviatoric stress at failure when the cell pressure is 60 kN/m2.
(ii) The cell pressure if major principal stress is 900 kN/m2.
